A group of foreign investors is considering the purchase of an English club (the investors’ nationality is n
ot important). They have employed you as a research executive to undertake a preliminary analysis of clubs in which they might invest, using materials in the public domain. Your task now is to select one of the clubs from the list to be posted on VITAL and appraise its recent financial performance, its current financial position including the size and structure of its debt, and its business potential (concentrating on the financial implications). You are advised to use a medium-term time-frame backwards and forwards (4-5 years) in order to identify key trends in the club’s financial performance and analyse its potential. Reports that simply summarise the last two years’ financial results will not normally achieve high marks.
You should not only consider the club’s current financial situation and how it has got there, but also the strength of its brand, its fanbase, the socio-economic environment within which it operates, the risks it faces, and hence the potential for business expansion. You may wish to draw up best-case, worst-case, most-likely scenarios. You may wish to provide an approximate valuation for the club, consider what might be done about its debts, and assess the need for further investment. The outcome of your analysis may be positive or negative: you may come to the conclusion that it is too risky an investment to be recommended, but on the other hand you may decide to recommend it at an appropriate price. Please bear in mind what a group of foreign investors is likely to know already about the structure of football in Europe and about the location where the target club plays.
The FAME and Keynote databases will provide you with summaries of recent financial statements for your chosen club. You can use Keynote to get access to the annual report that any firm in the UK has to deposit with Companies House, but note that very small firms do not have to file complete financial statements. Please remember that the notes to the accounts and the textual report by the Board and the auditors may be useful in your analysis. You might also wish to take into account independent reporting on a club (for example comments in the Deloitte reports, on the websites listed in this handbook, or in the financial press).
